Teaching and Education Resumé
My first job, at fourteen and nine months, was as an assistant teacher. Over the decades I have maintained my belief that education is one of the best ways to change the world. In 2006 I completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Education, and in 2017 a Masters of Education (Adult Ed). I consider myself a Critical educator and am particularly interested in informal and non-formal education.
Primary Ethics
I have been teaching the Primary Ethics program since 2012. I have taught 2-8 classes every week, across all grades from K to 8, across five different schools.
Coding and Robotics
Before covid I taught arduino with Nexgen Codecamp. It's a mix of electronics and coding which is excellent for beginners but can also be used for serious purposes.
I have previously taught coding in primary schools with Scope IT and school holiday robot and drone coding workshops for SuperCody.
Dance
In the nineties I assisted Tap dance classes in the suburbs where I learnt. This work somehow also saw me tutoring a four year old. She was having some trouble in tap classes - probably because she was four!
In the 2000s I ran free tap classes in Newtown. I taught the basics with beginners and people who hadn't danced since they were seven years old, and jammed with anyone else who came along.
I collaborated with a far more current tap dancer to run a tap workshop at Queer Collaborations 2016. The next year I ran a beginners Queer Tango workshop instead.
Running workshop space
Between 2007 and 2010 I ran NewQ, a quiet, dry and non-commercial space for queer community workshops, meetings and events in Newtown. In the space I ran workshops on screen printing; rubber and latex crafts; and the management and prevention of burnout, as well as a regular Stitch and Bitch. When we no longer had NewQ, I continued to run sewing groups in a cafe and in my home, and the burnout workshop also made another appearance at Ultimo TAFE.
Traditional crafts
I have taught a wide variety of handcrafts to both adults and kids. As well as the workshops at NewQ, I've run a couple of courses on tatting in the Creative & Leisure courses at Macquarie Uni. What else? I'll have to think...
I've taught sewing and screen printing to adults and very young kids and I was Art Mistress at Lines Languages in England for the summer of 2007, which ranged from clay, marbling and far too much glitter, to coming up with lessons on drawing.
Maths and English
I started tutoring maths when I was still in high school myself, and have continued on and off for many companies and private families. I'm sure it will pop up in my life again, however rusty I get at times!
Unfortunately, with the way extra-curricular education tends to be structured, everyone keeps wanting me to teach English, reading and creative writing, though it's not my forte. I've taught such programs for five different organisations, if I remember correctly. It's mostly after school programs for kids who would be just fine taking their time and learning it all at school, though there have definitely been kids here and there who I was glad to be able to help. The most notable gig was the first - teaching English as a Second Language to a Professor of Russian Languages!
I need to untangle all the many other things I've taught, I'm sure I'm missing some!
